Use Caution at Delivery - Fireworks Shipments Can Incur: Extra Freight Charges Image of Consumer Fireworks Delivery On Semi Truck liftgate.

At Captain Boom Fireworks, we want your order to arrive safely and without surprises.

You’ll never receive a bill for shipping from us after delivery. However, sometimes freight carriers add their own fees for special services during delivery. These are called Extra (or Accessorial) Freight Charges, and if they happen the freight company will bill you directly.

👉 Good to know: Some carriers (like FedEx Freight) can have especially high fees. With a little preparation, you can avoid them.

How We Handle Extra Freight Charges
  • We do not include extra services in our free or paid shipping.
  • If you get a bill, we’re happy to help explain what the charges mean, but:
  • You must file a dispute directly with the freight carrier. We cannot file a dispute on your behalf.
Common Extra Services:
Liftgate Service - Do you really need it?
  • What it is: A hydraulic platform that lowers freight to the ground.
  • When it applies: Any fireworks shipment could be charged this fee if you don’t have a dock or forklift. (Most retail orders of 10 boxes or fewer won’t need it. For these orders, the appointment setter will ask if you have a way to get it off the truck.)
  • Important note: Lift gate service doesn’t mean the driver unloads your boxes—it just gets them to the ground.
  • Cost: Can be $200 or more, depending on the carrier.
👉 Be prepared to unload directly from the truck. Take care not to authorize this when you set your appointment unless you truly need it. Make sure the lift gate service box is not checked on your delivery papers before signing.
Hand Unload - When the Driver Helps
  • What it is: When the driver carries boxes off the truck for you.
  • When it applies: If you ask the driver for help or request the order to be placed in your garage, on your porch, etc.
👉 If you have a large order coming, have an extra set of hands ready so you don’t get billed for this service.
Limited Access Delivery - Hard-to-Reach Locations
  • What it is: An extra fee for places that are difficult or impossible for semi trucks to reach. Examples: Dead end or Cul de Sac roads, gated neighborhoods or businesses, narrow streets, streets with low tree branches, schools, churches, or government facilities.
👉 If your address has limited access, you should request to pick up at the freight terminal when setting your delivery appointment.
Detention - Fees for Delays
  • What it is: A fee if the truck and driver are kept waiting.
  • When it applies: If you’re not ready to accept and unload when the truck arrives.
👉 Be ready to unload the truck at your scheduled time.
Redelivery - Missed Appointments
  • What it is: A fee if you miss your delivery appointment.
  • What happens: The shipment goes back to the terminal, and the carrier charges you to bring it back out.
Reconsignment - Delivery Address Changes
  • What it is: A fee for changing your delivery address after the order ships.
  • Cost: Often as much—or more—than the original shipping.
👉 Double-check your delivery address before placing your order.
Abandoned or Refused Freight - What Happens
  • What it is: If you don’t respond to the carrier within 3 days of your order reaching the terminal, or if you refuse delivery, your order will be returned to us.
  • Cost: You’ll be billed double our minimum freight zone shipping (round trip), even if your order originally qualified for free shipping.
Storage Charges - When Freight Sits Too Long
  • What it is: Fees for freight that sits at the local terminal too long.
  • How to avoid:
    1. Answer the carrier’s scheduling call promptly. They won't text you, they will call.
    2. Be ready for your delivery appointment.
More Freight Terms – Hazmat, LTL, Residential, & More
  • Hazmat Freight: All fireworks ship under Hazardous Materials rules.
  • LTL (Less Than Truckload): Your shipment shares trailer space with other freight.
  • Residential Delivery: Adds a day to transit. Requires an appointment and an adult (18+) signature. Fireworks can’t be left unattended.
  • FOB Origin: Once freight leaves our dock, it becomes your responsibility.
  • Notification of Shipment: Once your order is picked up, it’s considered shipped. You’ll get a confirmation email with tracking (a PRO number). For updates, contact the carrier directly.
